Art & Design

At Stable Futures, creativity is more than expression. It is a way for children and young people to find calm, build confidence and take steps towards future opportunities in education, work and life. Our Art & Design alternative curriculum offers a flexible and supportive space where every child can explore, make and grow.

Why this Matters?

For our learners, art is often more than a subject. It is a way to feel seen, safe and successful. Whether building a portfolio, developing practical skills or finding calm through creativity, each student’s progress is valued and their voice is heard.

Children and young people are introduced to traditional art techniques in a calm and supportive environment. Painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking and photography help develop motor skills, confidence and emotional expression.

  • Painting and Drawing – Guided sessions using watercolours, poster paints and soft pencils.
  • Sculpture and 3D Design – Working with clay, cardboard, wire or plaster to explore form and structure.
  • Printmaking – Using collage, lino cutting and string printing to create layered and expressive work.
  • Photography – From pinhole cameras to digital editing, young people learn to capture and share how they see the world.

Learning by making with purpose and pride.

Some children and young people thrive through hands-on activity. This part of the alternative curriculum supports practical learning and links closely to enterprise, helping them build confidence and develop real-world creative skills.

  • Textiles and Fashion – Designing and making through sewing, fabric painting and wearable art.
  • Upcycling and Creative Craft – Transforming old or unwanted materials into something useful or decorative.
  • Enterprise Projects – Creating, marketing and selling handmade items through small-scale business experiences.

A safe space to create, reflect and feel heard.

Creative expression can be a powerful support for emotional wellbeing. This area offers gentle, personalised sessions that help children and young people explore their feelings and build emotional resilience.

  • Therapeutic Art – Sessions developed to support emotional awareness and regulation.
  • Sensory Art – Multi-sensory experiences with texture, light and materials designed especially for young people with SEND or complex needs.
  • Integrated Performing Arts – Blending movement, music and visual art to support confidence and full-body creative expression.

For many children and young people, thinking about what lies ahead can feel daunting. Some may have gaps in their education or have struggled to believe in themselves. By making next steps feel achievable and grounding learning in real-world experience, we help them see a future full of possibility.
