Mainstream school works well for a lot of children. But not all of them.
Some children find the classroom environment too loud, too fast or too unpredictable. Others have been through difficult experiences that make it hard to sit still, concentrate or trust the adults around them. Some have simply fallen so far behind that returning feels impossible. This does not mean they cannot learn. It means the setting is not right for them.
Stable Futures exists for these children. We are an Alternative Provision based at Simms Farm in Mortimer Common near Reading, offering education outside of a mainstream school, shaped around what a young person actually needs rather than what a standard timetable allows.
Why Mainstream Does Not Work for Every Child
A lot of children who come to Stable Futures have experienced what professionals call adverse childhood experiences. Neglect, family breakdown, domestic violence. These experiences affect how a child’s brain and body respond to everyday situations.
In a busy classroom, that might look like anger, shutdown or refusal to engage. Teachers often have limited time and large classes, so these children get labelled as difficult or disruptive. Exclusions follow. The child falls further behind and starts to believe that school simply is not for them.
That belief is one of the hardest things to undo. But it can be undone, with the right support and the right environment.

What Stable Futures Actually Looks Like
We work with children and young people aged 6 to 18. Our programmes are built around animals, the outdoors and practical hands-on learning.
Young people might spend time working with horses, caring for small animals, growing food, cooking or making things. The setting is calm and consistent. Groups are small. The same staff are there each time.
For many of the children we work with, that consistency is something they have never had before. It makes a real difference.
We also offer a structured curriculum alongside all of this. Young people can work towards qualifications through AQA, ASDAN, RDA and City & Guilds. Leaving with something recognised matters, and we take that seriously.
Why Animals and the Outdoors Help
It is worth explaining why we work the way we do, because it is not just about giving children a nice day out.
Animals, particularly horses, respond to how a person is feeling in the moment. They are not influenced by a child’s reputation or history. For a young person who has learned to be guarded around people, that kind of straightforward interaction can be a starting point for rebuilding trust.
Working outdoors, with animals and with their hands, also helps children regulate. Physical activity, fresh air and purposeful tasks all reduce anxiety. A child who cannot sit in a classroom for an hour might be able to spend a full morning focused on caring for an animal or tending a vegetable bed. That focus, once it exists, can be built on.
Who We Work With
We welcome referrals from schools and PRUs, local authorities, CAMHS, youth services, social care teams and families. We also work with post-16 providers supporting young people in transition.
If you are working with a child who is struggling in school, or who has been excluded, or who simply cannot engage with mainstream education right now, Stable Futures is worth a conversation.
Early referral is better than waiting for a crisis. The sooner a young person finds an environment that works for them, the easier it is to rebuild confidence and get back on track.
What Progress Looks Like at Stable Futures
We do not measure success in the same way a school does. A child who arrives unable to make eye contact and six months later takes the lead in a grooming session has made real progress. A young person who has never finished anything completing a planting and cooking project from start to finish has achieved something genuinely significant.
These things matter. They are the building blocks for everything that comes next.
