Equine Programmes

At Stable Futures, our equine programmes offer powerful therapeutic experiences for children and young people aged 6 to 18 who may be struggling with emotional, behavioural, or educational challenges.
"Horses change lives. They give our young people confidence and self-esteem. They provide peace and tranquillity to troubled souls. They give us hope."
— Toni Robinson
Why Horses?

Horses are deeply intuitive and emotionally attuned animals. They mirror human behaviour, respond to non-verbal cues and live entirely in the present, offering patience, acceptance and a chance to reconnect.
Research shows strong neurological and emotional parallels between horses and humans. This makes them exceptional partners in therapeutic work, especially for children who may be resistant to traditional, verbal therapies.

Therapeutic Horsemanship (TH)

Stable Futures offers a Therapeutic Horsemanship–informed provision designed to support children and young people through structured, purposeful interaction with horses.
Our programme is primarily unmounted, focusing on groundwork, horse care, observation, and stable-based activities that promote emotional regulation, confidence, communication and functional skills. Sessions are tailored to individual needs and delivered within a safe, supportive environment.

For learners referred through Amegreen Children’s Services, including learning disability homes and Amegreen Education, a small amount of carefully risk-assessed riding may be incorporated where appropriate. This is offered only through agreed referral routes and as part of bespoke support plans.
All therapeutic horsemanship activities are delivered in line with the individual learner’s abilities, needs, and outcomes.
Equine-Facilitated Learning (EFL)

Equine Facilitated Learning is a core part of the Stable Futures offer and is available to all learners. It is a ground-based, experiential approach that uses purposeful interaction with horses to support personal development and essential life skills.

Through unmounted, activity-led sessions, learners develop communication, emotional awareness, problem-solving, teamwork, confidence and emotional regulation. Horses respond naturally and honestly to human behaviour, providing immediate, non-judgemental feedback that encourages reflection, self-awareness and positive change.

Our EFL sessions are practical and reflective, helping learners learn by doing and reflecting. They are also bespoke, shaped around individual needs and goals, and flexible, offered on a short or long-term basis. Working alongside horses engages the whole self, physically, emotionally and mentally, helping learning become meaningful, memorable and transferable to everyday life.

In a calm and supportive environment, learners build genuine relationships with horses, develop trust and understand boundaries. They can explore and process emotions in ways that support wellbeing, engagement and personal growth across a wide range of needs and abilities.

"Horses reflect our emotions, while at the same time they seem to know how to give us exactly what we need to soothe our pain."
— Barbara Schulte
Equine Accreditation Pathways
All provision is delivered within our overarching Animal Care Framework, ensuring a structured and outcomes-focused approach.
Learners can achieve industry-recognised accreditations, including ASDAN, AQA Unit Awards, and RDA Proficiency Tests, which evidence skill development and progression.

These pathways support learners to move towards work experience, further education or training, and, where appropriate, paid employment, in line with individual education and support plans.
Meet our Horses
At Stable Futures, our horses are at the heart of everything we do. Each one plays a vital role in helping children and young people build confidence, trust, and emotional resilience.

Our herd is carefully selected for temperament and suitability. Many have their own unique backgrounds and are supported to form calm, consistent relationships with learners in a safe, structured environment.

Through Therapeutic Horsemanship and Equine Facilitated Learning, we help learners develop self-awareness, communication and relational skills. Our horses’ natural sensitivity supports work around emotional regulation, trauma-informed practice and personal development.

Each horse contributes in different ways, supporting engagement through gentle interaction, routine and purposeful activity.

Refer With Confidence
Working closely with our referral partners, we provide tailored support based on individual need. Our referral pathways include a close partnership with Amegreen Children’s Services, supporting their learning disability homes, as well as Amegreen Education, including Haywards Farm School and Northcroft School. We also accept external referrals from local areas and surrounding counties.
Our equine services are bespoke. We work with referrers to shape a programme that meets the unique needs of each child or young person. Whether the aim is to build confidence, support emotional regulation or prepare for re-engagement in education, our horses and our team help learners take meaningful steps forward.
